tony, this is “ultra” exciting!!!!! even though you still have miles to go before you get to ireland…….the idea of a lap of the country is brilliant. now i better get some miles into my legs so i can do a few days with you. well done, it looks like the 44,000km was passed a couple of hours ago. great work. kevin

Thanks Kevin and Greg you are welcome to bring your bike over from Oregon!
BTW I did a major interview for Irish Runner magazine and another journalist wanted to know if it would be okay to run with me for a couple of days in Europe and do an article on the run so to speak.
I have also gotten many requests to run in Ireland and would like to remind people of my Mission Statement at this stage:

Anyone from anywhere in the world is invited to run or observe me any day of the year announced or unannounced anywhere in the world!
Delighted to have runners with me it goes without saying.. That is as long as they are patient and can run very slowly :)

Well done on completing over 44,000 kms today. Great irish route -:)

Tony—sounds like a great plan!!!—-And I will think about the bike thing—perhaps easier to get a bike there then to transport one over???—Anyway—wouldn’t be there for the full amount of time anyway–but if you land on 9/13 and the Dublin Marathon isn’t until 10/26 that gives you a month and a half to do the circuit—maybe could catch up somewhere along the way–??? Wow=–hard to believe that this is all starting to become reality–not that it hasn’t been for the last 4 years–but the potential finalization of your endeavor makes me a bit melancholy as it has been great following along with each turn and twist of your route—at any rate–gotta get through Turkey and Europe—and then it will nearly be party time woohooo–
    OK man–Good running–Greg

    Hi everyone!
Sorry I forgot to mention the 44,000th km has been run. I didn’t even bat an eyelid as I ran through it! Taking these things far too much for granted :)
I had a bad day Sunday when rain stopped play at 30km. Was lucky to find a place to shelter for the night.Because of my route change for lap around Ireland I can’t afford the extra kilometres to Ankara, about 70 and am going directly to Istanbul about 850km away. I have already passed on my regrets to the wonderful staff at the Irish embassy there.
I now need about 45km a day to arrive in Istanbul a day early for my schedule of crossing the Bosporus Bridge (and into Europe :) sorry even when I say this to people I can’t resist a smile!) on June 7th

  6. Fergus Says:

Good Man Tony, The very mention of all those familiar places on the final circuit of Ireland is so reassuring. Like Kevin Scanlon I must get into action and be ready to do some of the distance with you. Certainly I wouldn’t miss the final lap into Merrion Square for anything. Great progress . More congrats.

  7. John Geesler Says:

Tony, I want to come over and run some with you at the end, I’ll have no vacation days left so I’m not sure how I can do it. Let me work on it. You’ve been inspiring us here in NY state since you’ve started.

  8. theworldjog Says:

Thanks John. That would be wonderful!
    For those that don’t know.
John Geesler was my biggest rival and friend in competition. He is an american legend! We had six massive battles and the score was 4-2 to John.
I stayed with him and his club in upstate new York when running through. Please see blog archive January 2011.
PS yes you Americans don’t get much time off. John uses every minute of his vacation running multi day races. If you can make it I promise you can carry an American flag! Talk soon Tony
PPS. Belated congrats to my former Irish teammate Eoin Keith on his recent victory running 500 miles in the New York 6 day race. I followed the race while running Iran. Eoin beat John! Well done John I know you were also happy with your distance.

    Friday morning update.
Hi everyone a long overdue update. Tues 50km, Wed 54km and yesterday 53km. I felt strong all the way yesterday until I reached the outskirts of Amasya in the last kilometer! Total 44,224km for 1,006 road days. 660 kilometers to Istanbul.
Am almost half way across Turkey..
It seems my permit to run across the service path of the non pedestrian Bosporus bridge connecting Europe to Asia is not a formality. I have submitted my passport details and thank the wonderful Irish embassy staff in Ankara for their massive efforts. I got the following message from them this morning.

” Erok spent most of yesterday morning on the phone to various Ministries enquiring about the permission. We are expecting a decision by the middle of next week.”

BTW it seems there is huge interest among Irish runners in my return to Ireland to run a lap of the country.
Some runners have already said they will run some days with me and invites are coming in.
Many thanks to Siobhan Clifford whose PR/marketing company will be coordinating and promoting my run around the country. :) Please stand by for an announcement on this very soon. My route is being firmed up with arrival dates and daily distances. I can hardly wait!

About Tony

I have always considered myself to be an average runner. In school, I was even bullied for I was a sports wimp. Through hard work, dedication, perseverance, self-belief and a strong mind I succeeded in not only running around the world but breaking four ultra running world records during my competitive career. Having previously cycled around the world I didn't start running until I was almost 30. Then I had a dream of running around the world. For many reasons, I waited for over 20 years. One reason was to establish my pedigree as an endurance athlete. I started and finished my world run as the current World Record-Holder for 48 Hours Indoor Track 426 kilometres (265 miles), a record I have held since 2007. I also broke and still hold the World Record for 48 hours on a Treadmill 405 kilometres (251 miles) in 2008. When I retired from competition, more pleasing than any of my world, European or Irish records I had the respect of my fellow athletes from all over the world - in my opinion, sports greatest reward - an achievement I am most proud of. Then I finally put myself out to pasture, to live my ultimate dream to run around the world! This blog was written on the road while I struggled to find places to sleep and to recover from running an average of 43.3 kilometres or 27 miles per day for 1,165 road days. There were many nights I typed this blog on a smart phone, so fatigued my eyes closed. Many journalists and endurance athletes have referred to my world run as the most difficult endurance challenge ever attempted. During my expedition I rarely had any support vehicles, running mostly with a backpack. In the more desolate areas I pushed my gear, food and water in a cart which I called Nirvana, then I sent her on ahead to run with my backpack once again over altitudes of almost 5,000 metres in the Andes. I stayed in remote villages where many people had never seen a white person before. I literally met the most wonderful people of this world in their own backyard and share many of those amazing experiences in this blog. My run around the world took 4 years. There were no short cuts, I ran every single metre on the road while seeking out the most comprehensive route across 41 countries, 5 continents, I used 50 pair of running shoes and my final footstep of the run was exactly 50,000 kilometres, (almost 31,000 miles) I eventually finished this tongue in cheek named world jog where I started, at the finish line of my city marathon. I started my global run with the Dublin Marathon on October 25th 2010 and finished with the Dublin Marathon on October 27th 2014 at 3 05pm! Thank you for your support, I hope you can share my unique way of seeing the world, the ultimate endurance challenge! Read more...
