BEST WISHES TO EOIN KEITH IN THE ACROSS THE YEARS RACE!

Best wishes to Eoin Keith my friend and former team mate on the Irish 24 hour team.

Eoin is making a massive step up in time and distance having run ‘ only ‘ 24 hours in the past. Well on Saturday 29th Eoin will be running a 3 day race in Phoenix, Arizona  -  one of my favourite and special races from my competitive career – Press  HERE  for race website, For updates press the red square on the homepage where it says ‘ Results and Webcam ‘

Eoin will be taking up where I left off with my old rival and great friend John Geesler in this 72 hour Across The Years race,  so named as it ends on New Years morning. I emailed John to say..

” Sorry I wont be there to give you a good butt kicking John so I have sent Eoin over to do the job!”

John is highly respected for his sportsmanship and humor all over the world and is a special friend to Team Ireland so please log on for live updates from the 29th. Please feel free to send the runners messages which are read out to them as they run by the communication tent on the track. At midnight on the New Year the bubbly is cracked open, fireworks explode and a party begins. Many runners walk a lap or two except the serious ones, I wonder who they are! :)  Good luck Eoin I know you can take the title back to Ireland :)

After 9 hours in the 72 hour race Eoin is in second place around 84.5km very fast start. I hope he has not gone out too hard as there is a long, long way to go and he has never run beyond 24 hours before, but I know he is a very smart and tough runner :) He is about 10km behind the leader. I have not seen John Geesler yet. Tony

Where is John Geesler, I always loved watching Tony and John compete against each other in so many races. He is a wonderful sportsman. Hope he’s not injured

After 25 hours Eoin is in second place running very hard with 209.5 run! He took an hour just before the end of the first day. He is about 22km behind the leader Joe Fejes who is running at a suicide pace!
Eoin has a 17km lead from Ed Ettinghausen the third place runner.
I emailed my friends in John Geeslers club to ask what happened to him and got this reply from my host Stan when I stayed with the lads during my run through their upstate New York area in Jan 2011.

    ” Tony -

We were just asking that this morning.

Dave (Putney) said Geez’ flight got delayed, so he is running the 48 hours starting this morning. Geez has also recruited another sucker (er, participant) for the 72 hours – a young guy from our club named Kelsey Barra. His name should be in the results. It sounds like he is still running the 72 hours, so I haven’t figured out if he and Geez travelled together, or just both had flight delays.

Hey, Tony – you are an honorary Kicker because of that post-race picture from Across the Years of you and Geez that we sent you framed and enlarged from the web site. That was the year you came in second to Geez – a year before you turned to tables on our Cult Leader.

I am at my work computer right now, so I can’t check up on you or Geez. I have seen you are doing well – and we send our best wishes for you to stay healthy enough to complete this adventure of a lifetime !!

    – Stan (and Joann and Sweet Pea)- ”

I am sure John will be dissapointed about missing the start and Eoin too as I know he was looking forward to running against the former American 48 hour record-holder. Now they are running on the same track but in different races.

Well done to all the runners in ATY races setting many wonderful records! Special congrats to Eoin Keith for breaking my Irish 48 and 72 hour road records :) C’est la vie! And in doing so ran a wonderful 500km plus run for second place. You were so unlucky to run this incredible race with Joe in such magnificent form! Well done Joe and all the runners! Also special well done wishes to my old buddy John Geesler on a great second place finish in the 48 hour race. Tony Mangan watching from Dublin, Ireland

  5. Joe Fejes Says:

Thanks Tony! Mad respect to Eoin for his ATY performance and also to you for all your accomplishments. Hope to see both of y’all at some multidays in 2013.

    Joe Fejes

  6. Eoin Keith Says:

Thanks for all the good wishes Tony! It was a super race, and one I would never have run if I hadn’t heard so much about it from you.

About Tony

I have always considered myself to be an average runner. In school, I was even bullied for I was a sports wimp. Through hard work, dedication, perseverance, self-belief and a strong mind I succeeded in not only running around the world but breaking four ultra running world records during my competitive career. Having previously cycled around the world I didn't start running until I was almost 30. Then I had a dream of running around the world. For many reasons, I waited for over 20 years. One reason was to establish my pedigree as an endurance athlete. I started and finished my world run as the current World Record-Holder for 48 Hours Indoor Track 426 kilometres (265 miles), a record I have held since 2007. I also broke and still hold the World Record for 48 hours on a Treadmill 405 kilometres (251 miles) in 2008. When I retired from competition, more pleasing than any of my world, European or Irish records I had the respect of my fellow athletes from all over the world - in my opinion, sports greatest reward - an achievement I am most proud of. Then I finally put myself out to pasture, to live my ultimate dream to run around the world! This blog was written on the road while I struggled to find places to sleep and to recover from running an average of 43.3 kilometres or 27 miles per day for 1,165 road days. There were many nights I typed this blog on a smart phone, so fatigued my eyes closed. Many journalists and endurance athletes have referred to my world run as the most difficult endurance challenge ever attempted. During my expedition I rarely had any support vehicles, running mostly with a backpack. In the more desolate areas I pushed my gear, food and water in a cart which I called Nirvana, then I sent her on ahead to run with my backpack once again over altitudes of almost 5,000 metres in the Andes. I stayed in remote villages where many people had never seen a white person before. I literally met the most wonderful people of this world in their own backyard and share many of those amazing experiences in this blog. My run around the world took 4 years. There were no short cuts, I ran every single metre on the road while seeking out the most comprehensive route across 41 countries, 5 continents, I used 50 pair of running shoes and my final footstep of the run was exactly 50,000 kilometres, (almost 31,000 miles) I eventually finished this tongue in cheek named world jog where I started, at the finish line of my city marathon. I started my global run with the Dublin Marathon on October 25th 2010 and finished with the Dublin Marathon on October 27th 2014 at 3 05pm! Thank you for your support, I hope you can share my unique way of seeing the world, the ultimate endurance challenge! Read more...
